PAINTING'S EDGE SHOW AT TO RIVERSIDE ART MUSEUM
3425 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside, CA 92501
, 951-684-7111. http://www.riversideartmuseum.org.
Every year a two-week workshop in painting - painting techniques, painting subjects, painting ideas - takes place "up the hill" in Idyllwild, as part of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. Conducted from its inception by Roland Reiss, who began the workshop after retiring as head of the art department at Claremont Graduate University, "Painting's Edge" brings visiting artists and critics from the Los Angeles area and other parts of the country together with enrollees whose own ideas and ambitions as painters keep the dialogue lively, collegial, and productive. For the past several years the Riverside Art Museum has hosted a show sampling work from "Painting's Edge" participants, visiting artists and enrollees alike, providing us a taste of the workshop's vital exchange of concepts and methods. Closer to sea level, the energy does not diminish a bit. With Fred Tomaselli, Pat Steir, Mark Bradford, Beatriz Milhazes, Peter Plagens, Roland Reiss,
Wendell Gladstone, Patsy Krebs, Andy Moses, Laurie Fendrich, Jill Giegerich, Leslie Shows, Micaela Amateau Amato, Ben Weiner, Stephen Maine, Peter Clothier, and Carol Lee Chase.

PRETTY THINGS: CONFRONTING SENSUOUSNESS AT ARTSPACE
50 Orange Street, New Haven CT, 203-772-2709. http://www.artspacenh.org/.
This exhibition seeks to explore the role of sensuousness in contemporary art and promote new discussion about the significance of materials and form in art-making, beyond the context of formalist rhetoric. Including not only work that demonstrates a direct embrace of sumptuous materials and explores traditionally “decorative” motifs, enticing textures, and rich colors, but also work that problematizes seductive aesthetics in contemporary art with conscious irony or ambivalence. Curated by Joy Pepe. With Kelly Bigelow Becerra, Phyllis Bramson, Mia Brownell, Oliver Herring, Grant Lincoln Johnston, Joyce Kozloff, Cristi Rinklin.
